It’s been called the best kept secret in the East Bay. But with its relatively affordable housing and easy access to the Bay Area Rapid Transit System spawning an influx of former residents of San Francisco and San Jose, Antioch is well on its way to losing that label. Population in and around the Contra Costa County city is forecast to double within the next eight to ten years. Antioch is responding to that boom by embracing well-planned, controlled growth, including a downtown revitalization project to be completed in 2008. Construction is under way on the Highway 4 Bypass, opening in 2007, which will intersect with Highway 4 and serve Antioch, Oakley, Brentwood and Discovery Bay. Traffic counts for Highway 4, now in excess of 117,000 cars per day, are expected to increase to 125,000 by 2007.
From its location just off of Highway 4, Somersville Towne Center is ideally positioned to capitalize on this area’s boom. Anchors Macy’s, Gottschalks, Sears and Mervyn’s, are joined by 65 specialty stores, services and restaurants. National retailers, such as Victoria’s Secret, Forever 21, Claire’s, Bath & Body Works, Lids, Kay Jewelers, Anchor Blue, Pac Sun, Foot Locker, Regis Salon and Champs, complement a variety of regional and local merchants. Macy’s rousing grand opening in 2004 followed a mall renovation that was completed in late 2003.
